Lesson 24: Transforming Addiction

Hello, and thank you for subscribing to this copyrighted class! (If you would prefer not to subscribe to the entire class, but would like to exchange energy for this lesson, please do so here.)

There are many layers within this material. The most important layer is the experience, rather than the words and information, so to get the most from it we encourage you to take the time to listen to the recording above instead of just reading this transcript.

Now we invite you to take a deep breath, relax and allow yourself to feel this experience.

Dear creators, one of the biggest blocks to loving self, and one of the biggest ways that shame and unworthiness manifest themselves in humanity, is addiction. We want to give you a new perspective on addiction, and on how to move beyond it.

An addiction happens, dear friends, when you try to control yourself.

Remember, a creator does not control anything. A creator simply creates, and then creates again. A creator sets his or her creations free, and that goes for the creator’s own self. For yes, you are creating yourself every moment, and therein lies an important key for you to discover.

Dear friends, consciousness cannot be controlled. You cannot be controlled, and when you try it always creates problems. When you believe that there is such a thing as good and such a thing as evil, and that you must avoid the evil and do the good, you set up a dynamic in your life that can only end one way. And that is your own destruction.

When you force yourself to do anything, or to not do anything; when you try to control yourself in any way, your whole being rebels. For the grand sovereign being that you are refuses to live in limitation. You must be free, dear friends, and when you do not feel free, sooner or later you will break out and reestablish your freedom, or your sense of freedom.

So that is what happens with addictions, dear friends. You’ve been taught that there are so many things that you must avoid, and the harder you try the more intense becomes the desire to do those things, or to experience them, until at last that desire becomes so big that it becomes uncontrollable.

And then you do whatever it was, only you do it without consciousness. You do it in reaction. You do it in rebellion against the rules, instead of consciously for your own enjoyment, and then an imbalance is created. Then you feel horrible and you try to go back to control, and then that part of you erupts again and the cycle deepens, and soon you find yourself addicted to something.

And dear friends, you cannot cure an addiction in any way but one. You can find ways to manage that addiction. You can even find ways to make it seem to disappear, through more control, through different means of control. But dear friends, it doesn’t really go anywhere at all. It just changes its form.

If you are addicted to alcohol, oh, there are many programs to help you release that addiction, but all too often they do it through control, through shame and guilt, through encouraging you to acknowledge your own unworthiness. Oh, it seems to work. Often it seems to cure that addiction to alcohol. But take a look dear friends, at where else that addiction will surface. It might show up in an addiction to sex, or to food, or in many different ways that are far more subtle, far more difficult even to recognize, let alone to deal with.

No, dear friends, an addiction cannot be cured through shame, through control or manipulation, or through any other means but one. And that dear friends, is to set yourself free.

If you really want to heal an addiction the solution is not to fight it, for the only thing that can ever do is either to make it worse or to make it change its form. If you really want to free yourself from an addiction, the solution is to accept it.

Oh, that goes against everything you’ve ever learned. Accept my addiction? you ask. Won’t that just make it bigger? No, dear friends, it will not.

When you accept your addiction and everything about it; when you accept the part of you that wants to break that rule, and when you allow yourself to do that consciously, then things will change. Then the addiction will fade away, for it will no longer be needed.

You see dear friends, addictions have a purpose, and it is a very important purpose. That purpose is to set you free.

Oh, it doesn’t often work very well. It’s an interesting game that you have created, an interesting battle with yourself. Dear friends, when you truly set yourself free you will have no more need for addictions, and they will no longer be part of your life.

If you want to free yourself from an addiction to anything, then don’t stop yourself from doing that thing. Instead, do it consciously. Do it in full awareness, and take the time to enjoy it. Take the time to really feel it. Take the time to really feel yourself, to really have the experience.

When you are acting from an addiction, a part of you is trying really hard not to feel it, not to have the experience, because you feel guilty about it. Dear friends, it is that that keeps the addiction going, for then you keep doing this thing over and over again. You keep taking the drug, or eating the food, or drinking alcohol, or smoking the cigarette, or whatever it is. But you don’t let yourself feel it. You don’t let yourself have the full experience, in full consciousness, and so you are never fulfilled.

And that brings us to another aspect of addictions, dear friends, for most addictions are designed specifically to help you avoid feeling yourself. Why? Because you are terrified of yourself. You are ashamed of yourself, and so you create addictions to keep you numb, to keep you from feeling.

But dear friends, dear creators, you cannot move forward until you are willing to face and accept yourself. You cannot reclaim your creatorship, you cannot free yourself from the misery of life, until you are ready and willing to feel yourself, without distraction, without deadening yourself.

Many people are addicted to music. Oh, and we think music is a wonderful, wonderful thing. But most people are addicted to it. They can hardly be anywhere without having loud music playing, because it helps them to not feel themselves.

Try it, dear friends. Try turning off your music and just sitting with yourself for a time, and see what happens. Chances are it will be a very uncomfortable experience for you.

Dear friends, if you want to reclaim your creatorship, if you want to fall in love with you, then it’s time to go into that experience.

We are not suggesting that you stop listening to music entirely. But start giving yourself time alone with yourself, without anything that will distract your mind or distract you from feeling you. Oh, at first it will seem like hell. But go into it, dear friends. It’s you, and you are a beautiful and grand being.

But when you go into yourself you’re going to have to face all those aspects of you that you’re ashamed of, that you’ve tried to get away from. You’re going to have to feel them, and you’re going to have to welcome them home. For dear friends, there is no other way to reclaim your creatorship and to end your cycles of misery on Earth.

Almost every human is addicted to feeling good. Almost every human on Earth will do nearly anything to avoid those “bad” feelings. As you have evolved in your consciousness, some of you have found new ways to avoid the bad feelings.

You found things like meditation. Oh, meditation can be a wonderful way to avoid those bad feelings. It can be a useful thing for calming yourself when things get overwhelming. But too often, dear friends, meditation is used as an escape, as a way to get away from yourself, as a way to leave your body and go somewhere else where it’s more quiet, more peaceful.

And that is why you will not find a lesson on meditation in this program, for we want you to come back into your body. We want you to go into yourself, to have all that you are, including all those negative feeling experiences and all those crazy thoughts in your mind. We want you to stay in your body. For dear friends, that is where you will find yourself.

In all those ugly parts of you is where you will really find yourself. It’s time to bring them home, dear friends.

It’s time to let go of the rules, to let go of the shame, and to bring those parts of you home.

And as we have said before, bringing them home does not mean fixing them or changing them. Bringing them home means accepting them and letting them be part of you. Once you do that they will integrate into you, and they will come into balance. But if you want to reclaim your creatorship and your wholeness, you must let them be part of you.

You must let yourself have whatever experience you want to have, and feel it. For when you live by rules, dear friends, you will live by addiction and shame. There is no other way.

So dear creators, are you willing to set yourself free?

Take your notebook, make a list of the ways that you try to control yourself and the world around you. Start to become aware of how much you try to control, and then make a choice.

I choose to live freely. I am a sovereign creator being. I do not need rules and restrictions. I choose freedom for myself, and I choose to experience, to feel, all that I am.

Make another list, dear friends. Make a list of the things that you avoid, and the feelings, and the circumstances, and experiences that you avoid. Include the little things—the foods, the tastes—that you avoid, along with the big things. They’re just experiences, dear friends. They cannot harm you.

The only thing that can harm you is your resistance to those experiences. And even that is an illusion, for you cannot truly be harmed. But it will create misery in your life.

When you make the choice and begin to see everything as life, as nothing more or less than an experience, a lot of things will change. You’ll find that things you didn’t like before, now you actually like them. You may find that things you thought you liked aren’t as much fun.

A lot will change, dear friends, when you allow yourself to have the experience. And your addictions will fade away.

We are complete.

Hagan otra lista, queridos amigos.

Somos completos.
